INT-ACT

Intangible Cultural Heritage,
Bridging the Past, Present and Future

What are we working on?

INT-ACT will be identifying Emotional, Experiential and Environmental (3E) dimensions contained in intangible cultural heritage, and utilising immersive eXtended Reality (XR) environments to present these dimensions in the context of their associated tangible cultural heritage sites.

Objective 1

To investigate the ways in which immersive XR environments containing enduring past and present 3E dimensions of intangible cultural heritage associated with tangible cultural heritage sites can be utilised to address future societal challenges at times of change.

Objective 2

To develop, formulate and evaluate the most effective methods of extracting, structuring, and presenting formalised knowledge containing the 3E dimensions of intangible cultural heritage associated with tangible cultural heritage sites.

Objective 3

To adapt, combine, formulate and evaluate transdisciplinary methods of inquiry for capturing, compiling, and preserving the 3E dimensions of intangible cultural heritage, as contained in the present and past human narratives of communities of people linked with tangible cultural heritage sites.

Objective 4

To investigate, formulate, and guide the ways in which immersive XR environments can be created to integrate, present and narrate the 3E dimensions of intangible cultural heritage associated with tangible cultural heritage sites, using novel XR interaction techniques, alternative narrative methods, and different audio-visual media.

Case study 1: CULTURAL TOURISM

The aim is to investigate the impact of cultural tourism on the socio-development of future societies, and mitigate its detrimental impacts on local communities by leveraging the use of immersive XR environments.

Case study 2: AGEING SOCIETIES

The aim is to investigate the impact of ageing populations and the diverging inter-generational views of cultural heritage on the wellbeing of older adults, while addressing related challenges through targeted uses of immersive XR environments.

Illustration representing disappearing communities

Case study 3: DISAPPEARING COMMUNITIES

The aim is to investigate the impact of urbanisation on creative and artistic identity of disappearing small rural communities that exist around tangible cultural heritage sites, and provide a platform for promoting rural arts and craft using immersive XR environments.

Case study 4: IMMIGRATION AND MULTICULTURALISM

The aim is to investigate the impact of immigration (crisis) on local communities, and determine how multiculturalism can act as a meaningful bridge between the local and immigrant communities by utilising immersive XR environments.
